UPDATE: On Jan. 31, 2022, California’s latest single-payer healthcare bill, AB1400, was withdrawn from the Assembly agenda before receiving a vote. The bill’s chief sponsor, San Jose Democrat Ash Kalra, called the defeat “only a pause for the single-payer movement.” But the future of AB1400 and prospects for further single-payer legislation remained unclear.
